# Internal Myth

An internal myth is a comfortable, unverified explanation for why a deal was won or lost that persists inside a GTM team because it's flattering or easy to repeat, not because anyone has checked it against the buyer's account. Every GTM team has a small canon of these stories: the deal lost to a competitor's lower price, the deal lost because the champion left, the deal that was unwinnable from the start.

What makes an explanation an internal myth isn't that it's false. Some internal myths turn out to be roughly accurate. What makes it a myth is that it became settled fact through repetition rather than verification, and once it's established, the team stops asking whether it's actually true.

Internal myths spread easily because they're self-protective. A loss attributed to a competitor's pricing doesn't require anyone to examine whether the demo missed the mark or a follow-up went unanswered. A loss chalked up to "the prospect wasn't a real fit" closes the question without anyone having to revisit how that prospect was qualified in the first place. The explanation that requires the least internal scrutiny tends to be the one that survives.

The cost shows up downstream. A team that believes it consistently loses on price will under-invest in discovery and messaging, because the internal myth points the fix in the wrong direction. A team convinced a particular competitor is unbeatable may abandon deals they could have won, because the myth has already decided the outcome before the deal is fully played out. The myth doesn't just misdescribe the past. It shapes how the team behaves going forward.

Independent win/loss interviews are one of the few mechanisms that reliably surface where an internal myth and the buyer's actual account diverge, because they ask the buyer directly rather than relying on what the internal team has already concluded.
