# How is a win/loss interview different from a CS call?

A CS call is run by someone who manages the account relationship going forward, so the customer shapes what they share to protect it. A win/loss interview is conducted by an independent researcher with no ongoing relationship to protect, which changes what a customer is willing to disclose.

## Same Buyer, Different Conversation

The distinction has nothing to do with the questions asked. A skilled customer success manager can ask genuinely open-ended questions and still run into the same limit every [managed conversation](/glossary/managed-conversation/) runs into: the customer is talking to someone they have to keep working with. A criticism raised on a CS call has a shelf life longer than the call itself. It shapes how the CSM sees the account, how responsive they are to future requests, and how the relationship feels going forward. Most customers weigh that cost before raising anything beyond a minor, easily resolved complaint.

A win/loss interview removes that cost entirely. The researcher has no account to manage, no renewal riding on the conversation, and no future interaction with the customer to protect. A customer who is otherwise satisfied, and has no reason to raise anything on a CS call, will often volunteer a specific criticism to an independent researcher: an observation about the sales process, a competitor whose pitch was more resonant, a detail about onboarding that never made it into any support ticket. None of it was withheld out of dishonesty. It simply had no safe outlet until the relationship was no longer in the room.

## What Each Conversation Is Actually For

A CS call exists to manage and grow an account. Its purpose is forward-looking: renewal, expansion, adoption, and catching problems before they become churn risk. A win/loss interview exists to understand a decision that has already been made, win or loss, with no bearing on the researcher's future interaction with that buyer. That difference in purpose is what makes the difference in candor possible, not a difference in interviewing skill.

This is also why CS notes and win/loss findings shouldn't be treated as interchangeable data sources. A CSM's account notes reflect a managed relationship in progress. Win/loss interview data reflects an independent account of a decision, and the two will frequently diverge on the same customer for the same reason a [rep debrief](/glossary/rep-debrief/) diverges from what an independent researcher hears in the same deal.
